CHAPTER 21
“You’ve got paint in your hair,” Ben said, looking down on the top of Kendall’s head where she knelt, trimming the edges of the wall along the wide baseboard. The call about an hour ago from Sadie Johnson had turned Kendall’s mood around. Dayla had opened her eyes this morning and announced that she was hungry. She’d also been awake enough to confirm that Nicholas Cardwell had attacked her.
Relieved by her friend’s improved health, Kendall had been relaxed, playful, and absolutely giddy ever since.
“Where?” Kendall brushed her fingers across the top of her head, smearing what was there or adding more to it. Basically, the girl was a hot mess.
He laughed. “You’re making it worse. Stop touching yourself.” Kendall cocked her head upward to catch his eyes, her brows raised in amusement. “And get your mind out of the gutter.”
“I will if you come down here and kiss me.” She turned around completely and tipped her face up to his. Apparently, she wanted to make the process as simple for him as possible.
He stood over her, shaking his head. “We won’t get anything done if I start kissing you. How about, we finish this room, and then I’ll give you a kiss.”
“My labor is worth at least two kisses,” she said in a pouty tone.
“Deal,” Ben said, rolling the paint down the wall in even strokes. “I can’t believe you’ve never painted before.”
“I’m doing pretty good, huh?” she asked, leaning back to inspect her work.
“Didn’t your aunt and uncle ever do this kind of thing?”
“No, they wallpapered the entire house back in the ‘80s and have never felt the need to mess with perfection.” She scrunched up her nose. “They even have the ceiling papered in one of the bedrooms,” she said with a little laugh.
“Not a fan of wallpaper. I’ve stripped off too many layers of the stuff in just about every room in this house. Swore I’d never do that to a wall again.” Ben bent down and dipped the roller into the paint pan again. With wide strokes, he covered the wall with the rich sage color.
“So you’ve torn down wallpaper, and you can obviously paint. What else are you responsible for around here?”
“Pretty much everything you see. Floors, walls, woodwork.”
“You’re kidding.”
“No. The place was a disaster, but I’ve always loved this house. When I was a kid, I’d play at the park across the street and think, ‘Someday that house will be mine.’ So when it came on the market, I decided I wanted to tackle it.”
“Tackle? You knew it needed a lot of work?”
“The outside was in rough shape. I had guys from work come out and help me with the new roof and the siding.”
“What’s your favorite project?”
“The foyer.” He paused to glance at Kendall. She had given up on the edging project and now sat cross-legged in the middle of the floor. That was okay. At least she was keeping him company. “It’s such a grand old space. A room unto itself, you know.
